For those who are curious about themselves, their surrounding world, even everything in our daily lives, Chemistry holds satisfying answers. Chemistry makes all the connections from small particles such as electrons, atoms, ions, and molecules, to polymers like DNA, plastics, to the largest conceivable object of observation such as the universe itself. Chemistry rationalizes the variety and abundance of our physical world; it defines the limits of various changes; it also reveals numerous potentials related to the well being of the human and the planet earth. On one hand, Chemistry is dynamic, it concerns the physical/chemical properties on time coordinates. On the other hand, Chemistry predicts the direction of any change under the given conditions. Chemistry helps us to discover the history, reality, and the future of any change.

The Department of Chemistry at SSH has developed a mechanism in which teaching and research work together effectively. In addition to providing high quality instruction in general and organic chemistry to the entire school, each faculty takes responsibility for training undergraduate and graduate students in theory and research methodology in the areas that interest them, using their specific expertise. From theoretical simulation, medicinal synthesis/analysis, organic solar cell development, catalyst development, to synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials, various spectroscopic methods, and molecular dynamics, the department is active in several important research areas. In the courses, students not only learn the fundamental principles of chemistry, but also gain practical experience in theoretical or experimental cutting-edge research.
