Department of Sociology and Anthropology
Welcome to the NU Anthropology Laboratory!

The Anthropology Laboratory opened at Nazarbayev University on December 2, 2016. It is used for both teaching classes like “Human Evolution”, “Laboratory Methods in Archaeology”, "The Archaeology of Ritual" and research: data collection and analysis of pottery, bones and stones. The laboratory is also equipped for digital archaeology: reconstructing 3D imagery of the site, looking at spatial association of artifacts through Geographic Information System (GIS).

On September 9, 2022, we expanded our facilities with the opening of the Archaeology Laboratory. This outdoor space enhances hands-on learning and supports activities such as flotation, experimental archaeology, and artifact washing. It also serves as a mock excavation area used to train students in excavation techniques before they participate in fieldwork. The outdoor lab is integrated into the “Laboratory Methods in Archaeology” course and is also a central feature of our annual PASTS Archaeology Summer Camp for children.
