Research Interest

His major research interests include:
1. Regulation of neurotransmitter receptors and cognitive function:
• To better understand the mechanisms of glutamatergic synaptic transmission
& synaptic plasticity
• To investigate the role of glutamate receptors (AMPA & NMDA) in learning
and memory

2. Understanding the mechanisms of aging & neurodegeneration
• To investigate the role of neural-glial interaction in aging & neurodegeneration
• To explore the impact of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) on aging and

3. Development of new therapeutic strategies to neurological disorders
• To search for molecules to prevent & treat Epilepsy
• To search for molecules that prevent aging & treat neurodegenerative

Department of School of Sciences and Humanities at Nazarbayev University. He was
hitherto Lecturer of Anatomy at Xinjiang Medical University (China), and Assistant
Professor of Physiology at the University of Rostock (Germany), and Deputy Director of
the National Laboratory Astana, Nazarbayev University.

Dr. Tursonjan Tokay is an accomplished neurobiologist with a working knowledge of
Molecular & Cellular Biology, Histology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and
Neuroscience. He is experienced in the research areas of synaptic transmission and
plasticity, aging, and neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Tokay has extensive research
experience in investigation on synaptic plasticity and cognitive function in the context of
aging, epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases using a variety of approaches,
including neural cell culture, electrophysiology, biochemistry, and animal behaviour
tests. Dr. Tokay is the author of a number of research articles relevant to this topic,
published in international scientific journals.
