Dr. Willardson joined the faculty of Nazarbayev University in Fall 2014. He worked previously at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). He earned his PhD from the University of Iowa in May 2013. Before becoming a professor, Dr. Willardson spent nine years in the U.S. military. During his career in the military he earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from Utah State University, and an M.S. degree in Strategic Intelligence from American Military University. Professor Willardson is currently serving as the Acting Chair of the Department of Political Science and International Relations.

Professor Willardson has a number of research interests. He examines the sale of arms as a foreign policy tool, and the phenomenon of arms in international relations in general. He is also interested in issues of security and intelligence and has papers published and under review that look at the nexus of security and intelligence in international relations.

Dr. Willardson is currently working on two book projects. The first is based on his dissertation and is about arms and foreign policy. The second is a book about rivalry brokers in the international system. Other current projects look at covert actions in the international system, civil-military relations in Kazakhstan, and arms sales and human rights.
