Matt Millard is an Assistant Professor at Nazarbayev University in the Department of Political Science
and International Relations. Prior to this, Professor Millard was a postdoctoral researcher at the Center
for Peace and Security Studies at the University of California, San Diego and a Visiting Instructor at Saint Louis University. Professor Millard obtained his PhD from the University of Alabama in 2018, his
master’s degree from Duke University in 2011, and an undergraduate degree from The Citadel in 2009.

Professor Millard’s research interests address a variety of areas in conflict processes. In particular,
Professor Millard is interested in how states and their leaders learn to use conflict from prior
interactions and successful uses of conflict. He is also interested in alliances, with a particular interest in
secret alliances and why states chose secret diplomacy. Current projects also include why democratic
countries fight longer conflicts that they ultimately lose and an examination of how geography affects
defense expenditures.
