Aminat Chokobaeva graduated with a Ph.D. in history from the Australian National University in 2017. Before coming to Nazarbayev University, Aminat taught at the University of Sydney and the Australian National University. Her interests include the uprising of 1916 in nomadic Central Asia as well as the broader issues of state-building and governance in the region. She is a co-editor of a volume on the Central Asian uprising of 1916 forthcoming with the Manchester University Press. She is currently working on her manuscript, where she examines the dramatic reconfiguration of Semirech’e, a majority nomadic frontier region on the border with Qing China, through the social and economic upheaval of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
