ANTDECLARED: The Department of Sociology and Anthropology Celebrates World Anthropology Day
On February 19, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology hosted ANTDECLARED to celebrate World Anthropology Day. The event brought together more than 100 students from Nazarbayev University and high school students from NIS for panel discussions, interactive sessions, and networking with faculty members and alumni. The goal was to introduce students and prospective applicants to anthropology, and the academic and career opportunities it offers.
Event Highlights Panel discussion with students and alumni, where they shared their experiences studying anthropology and how it has shaped their academic and career paths. The speakers list included:
Dariya Dalabayeva – researcher of Kazakhstan’s startup ecosystem, participant of an international entrepreneurship bootcamp in Hong Kong, co-founder of an EdTech startup.
Akimbek Kassymkhan – entrepreneur in the fitness industry, brand manager at BI Group.
Gulnur Muratova – participant in archaeological and anthropological research projects, Erasmus Mundus scholarship holder.
Miras Yesmuratuly – researcher involved in archaeological excavations in Kazakhstan and Georgia.
Interactive session “See the World as an Anthropologist” led by Professor Katherine Erdman. Participants explored the anthropological approach to studying society and culture, and discussed key research methods.
Panel discussion with faculty members, where they discussed their research and how anthropology provides valuable insights into social and cultural dynamics:

The event concluded with an informal networking session over coffee, where participants had the opportunity to ask additional questions and exchange ideas.
