NU signs Memorandum of Understanding with Digital Economy Development Center for Track-and-Trace system in Kazakhstan

NU School of Sciences and Humanities (SSH) strengthens its collaborative efforts in Kazakhstan, with the Department of Economics pushing forward the Memorandum of Understanding with the Digital Economy Development Center (DEDC). This partnership focuses on enhancing research in track-and-trace systems, an advanced digital labeling and monitoring technology used to combat the shadow economy and ensure market transparency.

Since 2020, Kazakhstan has implemented a product marking system Track & Trace for industries such as pharmaceuticals, footwear, and tobacco. This system assigns a unique QR code to products, enabling tracking from production to final purchase. The primary goal is to curb the illegal economy by ensuring that all transactions remain visible.

Professor Andrey Tkachenko from SSH’s Department of Economics highlights the benefits of this memorandum: “This collaboration allows the Department of Economics to provide its expertise in market analysis, econometrics, and economic research for the data collected by DEDC.”

Through the collaboration with DEDC, faculty and students of NU can now be involved in:

  • Joint scientific research projects with DEDC on economic, business, and management topics.
  • Thesis supervision for master’s students, integrating part of the Track & Trace data into their work.
  • Policy research, using its findings to apply for government grants.

Hopefully, this cooperation will offer a practical research environment for students, allowing them to apply their skills in data analysis and econometrics to real-world economic challenges for Kazakhstan. Along with that, representatives from DEDC and partner companies can visit NU to deliver guest lectures, showcasing how economics is applied in Kazakhstan’s regulatory landscape and highlighting the dynamics of the local economy in comparison to Western models, which students usually study.
