Prof. Adilov from Department of Chemistry, SSH and Prof. Nurxat Nuraje (SEDS) in collaboration with Prof. Tri Pham (SSH) developed tunable adhesive conducting polymers based on aniline derivative

The article titled “Controlled Synthesis of Polyaniline-based Nanomaterials with Self-assembly and Interface-Manipulation” was published in Langmuir journal (an ACS journal) and featured on the cover page.

Versatile nanostructures of conducting polymers are highly relevant due to their unique properties including electrical, optical, and mechanical, with changes in morphology. In this article a facile synthesis approach for the fabrication of different conducting polymer nanostructures, including hollow spheres, nanobowls, 2D sheets with arrays of nanobowls, 3D and their composites was developed. Changes in reaction conditions (pH, monomer, and oxidant concentrations) for the polymerization of aniline derivative monomer led to the above nanostructures.

These types of polymers have potential applications as conductive adhesive tapes, medical bandages, and reversible surfaces for robotic arms. Nanobowls and hollow spheres can be used as drug carriers that can be triggered by electrical stimuli. Kinetic control of polymerization was able to provide access to unprecedented nanostructures of the conducting polymers ranging from DNA origami to gecko-inspired nanostructures, with potential applications in drug delivery, energy storage, and adhesive materials. For example, this is the first conducting polymer material that can demonstrate similar adhesiveness (around 8 N/cm2) to gecko finger hairs.
