Prof. Vesselin Paunov, Chair of the Chemistry Department, and Dr. Timur Atabaev, Program Director for the B.Sc. in Chemistry, have once again been recognized among the top 2% of scientists globally in 2024.
This annual ranking, published by Stanford University, highlights the world’s most cited researchers and consistently includes faculty from Nazarbayev University. As of August 2024, in addition to Prof. Paunov and Dr. Atabaev, 25 other researchers from NU also rank among the top 2% worldwide.
The ranking is based on bibliometric data from the Scopus database, which monitors over 180,000 leading scientists. A comprehensive study conducted by a team from Stanford University, led by Professor John Ioannidis, categorized scientists into 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields. The evaluation was carried out by Science-Metrix, a globally recognized authority in science and technology assessment. The study assesses several key metrics, including citation counts, h-index, hm-index (adjusted for co-authorship), and a comprehensive score (c-score). The final ranking comprises two lists: one reflecting career-long achievements (updated through the end of 2023) and another focusing on citations received in the past year, specifically for 2023.
